Choosing the Right Toys

You may be thinking that you need to buy lots of different toys, but this doesn’t mean that you have to buy every dog toy you see in the aisles of your local pet supplies store. Even if you only have a handful of toys, what matters more is having different types. For example, you’ll need a squeaky toy that caters their aggressive nature and at the same time you’ll also need a softer toy that nurtures their gentler side. Also, you’ll want to have a Frisbee or tug so you can have the opportunity to play together, which is very important in building a stronger and deeper relationship with your dog.

Most of these toys can usually be found in stores that sell pet supplies in Milperra and they don’t cost a fortune if that’s what you’re worried about. Keeping several types of dog toys at hand will help to keep your dog’s interest in play—a rather important factor that contributes to their overall health and happiness.

The Case of Tennis Balls

Let’s start with one of the most common toys for dogs—tennis balls.

Tennis balls are one of the more popular toys that pet owners get for beloved dogs. There are several reasons why this is so. For one, many people who grew up with dogs have always given tennis balls to their pets—they’re just used to doing so. Second, tennis balls are readily available—that is, you don’t have to go to a pet supplies shop or a sports hub to get one because you can buy cheap tennis balls in most toy stores.

However, many experts would advise against the giving of tennis balls as toys for dogs. This is especially true in the case of large dog breeds. There are many reports of such dogs choking to death because they swallowed the tennis ball. Instead, get them actual dog toys from stores that sell pet supplies in Milperra that are big enough that they can’t swallow it.

Harmful Chemicals

As can be gleaned from the above paragraphs, choking is a serious hazard among our pet dogs. However, that is just one of the many issues that you should be concerned about. There’s also the problem of dog toys harmful and toxic chemicals being sold in some pet supplies stores.

Many of the toys sold in some pet products stores were found to contain chemicals which can have a negative impact on the health of our pets. Many of these were heavy chemicals like cadmium and lead. These are usually found in the dyes and preservatives that are used in the manufacture of dog toys. Even latex based dog toys (a material that is used in place of plastic) were found to contain lead, phthalates and hormone disruptors. These chemicals are known factors that contribute to poor health and demise of dogs. These are ingested by the dogs when they lick or chew on the dog toy that contains these chemicals.

That is why many experts would recommend that you avoid buying dog toys (or any other pet products) that have a strong chemical smells as this is usually an indication of residual chemicals. For instance, dyed rubber and fabric (like those used in some pet beddings) may contain toxic ingredients, and these may leach out when wet (such as when dogs lick them). The same is true for dog toys that are treated with fire retardants and stain guards, which usually contain formaldehyde and other harmful chemicals.
